Getting ready for the ride
Yesterday morning the ride was to Ash Fork and back and it was with some folks that ride regularly with the group that does the rides with Pat and Jim McCarver. The lead rider was a lady that was doing her yearly century and she invited who ever wanted to ride. I felt like riding.
The morning was gorgeous with a few clouds building around the edges and the forecast was calling for possible thunder storms. I drove out to Paulden to cut my ride short because I wasn’t sure if I could go the distance. I got there early enough and waited on ‘Old 89′ overlooking the highway. While I waited Howie and Dave showed up on their bikes. We chatted for a few moments and then they were on their way, the wanted to beat the storms and wind.

Howie and Dave
The group showed up and we were off. They rode from Prescott and had set a pace that made them move right along. From Paulden it starts up hill and then there’s a good size hill a little over a mile. The climbing gets a little tough about half ways up the hill and by the last three quarters of it, it’s a killer. By the time I topped the crest the group was gone! I was huffing and a puffing and I caught a glimpse of them as they crested the next little hill. Once I caught my breath I gave it all I had to catch up. I never did, I was trailing by a half a mile. They waited for me at the other side of Hell Canyon.

Waiting for me
After a short break we were off again. By then I could tell that I could not keep up that pace if I wanted to make there and back. I eased off a bit and they just inched away from me. From there on I rode solo. I got to Ash Fork and they wanted to stop at the local cafe for something to eat. I chose to munch on my energy bar and down a Gatorade. Once that was gone so was I. I knew they would catch up to me sooner or later.

Taking a break
Once back on my bike I knew I was toast. Both my legs were burning and aching. I didn’t want any cramping so I just stayed in the small chain ring and did the best I could. Around the Little Hell Canyon area I felt a few sprinkles and it felt good. Stopped to rest and drink more water.

Little Hell Canyon
By the time I started the last down hill into Paulden I could hardly move my legs. I took advantage of the down hill to rest. I pulled into the convenience store and got me another Gatorade. I sat there for a while… I couldn’t walk, all that well. After about 30 minutes I managed to put my bike away and put my shoes on. I was about to leave when the rest of the guys pulled in. I thanked them for letting me ride with them (very little) and I went home, thinking I need to ride more. My total miles was 53.7 miles and riding time 3:30:47
